Sean smashes €55 mark

Last night, Liverpool went 1-0 down after about half an hour in their match so on about 37 minutes i layed the 0-1 half time score for 1.33. I stuck €5 on it, meaning i’d lose about €1.65 if another goal didn’t go in. (i wouldn’t have taken this bet on but for the fact i had an €8+ cushion over Enda).

My balance stood at €54.91 which i was frustrated at. I wanted to get past the €55 mark so i had a look around and backed over 1.5 goals in the real madrid / rosenborg friendly match. Stuck €2 on it at 1.1, so i profited 20c.

However, once liverpool pulled one back, i layed against aston villa who immediately won a penalty and went 3-1 up and held on for victory, so i lost over €4 on that lay. My balance went back to €50.90. Decision time – i’d got a taste of €55 and wanted to reach it just to finish Enda off

I took on another lay. Madrid were 3-0 up at half time so i layed €5 on under 4.5 goals at 3.6, meaning i’d lose €13 if this bet went wrong. It did. The match finished 4-0, so my balance was shot back down to €37.90.

Now at this stage i was really angry with myself… i’d blown an €8+ lead and fallen back €4 behind Enda. “Why didn’t i just not bet?” i asked myself. This was shooting myself in the foot…

So i took another big decision today and went back to womens football – an area where i had huge success yesterday. I stuck with the same tactics again. I layed the 0-0 half time draw in an England / Italy match and i layed the draw at half time.

England won the first half 1-0 which meant i was back in business and touching the €50 mark again However, England had a woman sent off just before half time, yet they were odds on to win.

Italy were 10.5 for the win at half time, so i stuck €1 on that. Italy ended up winning the match 2-1, so i won another €6.50 (i layed some of it off after they equalised). So the end result is that i’m now sitting on a balance of €55.37. Hammer blow to Enda’s chances of victory this month.

My attacking approach has paid off again and i now have a €13.80 cushion over Enda. I’m also placing a temporary BAN on myself betting until i see evidence that Enda is mounting a comeback, just to put every ounce of pressure on Enda’s shoulders…

Sports betting: first winning day

I see that I got two votes on the Poll today, so thanks to both of you if you’re reading back again! It might not mean a lot in terms of actually winning, but I appreciate the vote and the fact that someone (or two) is actually following our online betting challenge.

I had a bet on a longshot this morning that I blogged about earlier. My balance after that bet was 19.70, it’s now gone up to 19.86 after a small win on the horses. I actually bet on two races, lost the first and profited on the second. With a current exposure of 15 cents from this morning’s bet I’m actually in profit for the first time 19.86 + 0.15 = €20.01. If I loose the 15 cents I’m still down but while it’s in play it’s my money.

Anyway, the bets I placed today where an absolute joke! I had two 10 cents bets

After a quick look at the form guides I backed a 15/1 shot that traded at around 5/2 during the race and finished 3rd. If this comes in I profit 1.50 for a very small stake, so it’s worth a punt. My second bet was on the favourite, Start Me Up, at the 5.35 at Cork. This came in at odds of 2.65/1 (my first winning bet, not including the poker tables) so I’m up 26 cents for this race, minus the 10 cents loss from the previous race I’m up 16 cents for these two bets.

Right, I know you’re thinking I’m the smallest punter of all time, but I’m just betting like this to practice my discipline and slowly increase the amount I bet this month, this now stands at €6.87. Sean admitted in his previous post that he thought about backing Dublin in the All Ireland Quarter Final at Croke Park today. I’m not after timing here but I did actually think that he might go for Dublin and with a large punt too, so I was bidding my time to see how he ended today, I thought he’d loose ! I said a couple of days ago that I thought Kerry where worth a punt at 7/5 even though I thought a draw was likely. I avoided the game anyway and was hoping Sean would drop a few quid on it. He’s increased his lead today again, fair play, but I’m back to where I started. It’s like I never made a bet, like I’ve never lost a bet Sean’s running ahead but I’m not bothered, it’s the 3rd of August not the 23rd, the big bets will come later! He’ll be hard to catch though, I know he’s a determined man, you don’t blog almost daily for over 3 years without a determined streak!

I’ve lost

I had a €2 bet on the Meath v Limerick 4th round qualifier and it’s not good news. I didn’t think there would be much between the teams and I thought that Limerick provided a bit of value at almost 2/1. I was wrong! I thought that if Limerick kept it tight until around half time then their odds would drop to just above even money. So I placed a lay of limerick for €2.50 at 2.1 to try and green up on this market. This would have left me with 50 cents profit for both the draw and Meath and just over a euro if Limerick won it. Unfortunately the lowest that Limerick traded during the match was 2.48 so I ended up loosing my initial 2 euro stake! I was surprised that it wasn’t picked up as Limerick should have levelled the game right on the stroke off full time but they carried the ball too far. Here’s my bet below:

After Sean’s win earlier today, I thought my best bet to catch him was at the poker table. I entered a nine man table game at 10c + 1c rake in the hope that I could turn a profit but it wasn’t to be and I went out in 6th place with Ace/Nine suited. If I placed first in this sit and go tournament I would have won 45 cents so I was right back up there with Sean. I videod some hands in the game and I’ve emailed Betfair to see if it’s ok to post videos without breaking their terms of service. If I’m not, i’ll add the video to this post later. Betfair only seems to have taken 8 cents instead of 11 cents for this game so my new balance is 17.92:

That leaves me €2.08 in the red by day one and I’m trailing Sean by €2.50 already. I still think I’ll have another bet of the Gaa matches tomorrow but I may let the game start before betting this time. I’m behind but I’m not finished by a long shot. Tomorrow is a new day!

I’ve never lost a bet!

That’s not 100% true, actually I have lost bets – lots of them, but I had to open my blogs on here with a controversial statement! In a way it is true though as the birth of this site and the competition between myself and Sean is a totally fresh start to online betting for me! As off today, I’m neither a winning gambler nor a loosing gambler, so I’ve never lost a bet! The fact that I haven’t actually won a bet is another story! Until we get this site off the ground I will not be placing any offline bets or any other online bets other than those mentioned on here. I have a €20 online budget and that’s my lot!

So where do I start? Well as this is a new idea and I’m excited about it. I know that I’ll probably find it very hard not to rush in and have a hundred bets tomorrow I need to keep the discipline though and try to ensure that I’m getting value out of my €20 over the month of August. Speaking of the €20, here’s a screenshot of my Betfair account with a starting balance of €20 as of 1st of August.

Last night, I also popped out a book I’ve had for a while, ‘Winning on Betfair for Dummies’. It’s a good wee book and gives a good run through how Betfair works. Betfair is actually pretty simple, but it’s daunting enough to begin with so as part of my effort on here I will try to produce some videos on how to sign up to Betfair and how to use the site and the different types of bets you can place on there.

I’ve been looking at the all Ireland Quarter Final Football matches this weekend, here’s the odds below:

I’m tempted to back a draw in the Dublin v Kerry game as I’m guessing it’ll be blown up if there’s a sniff of the side’s being level anywhere near the 70 minute mark. Dublin are going in to this one as favourites, but can you write of Kerry and are they worth a punt at 7/5? I wont be going for this one though for now but can I think it’s worth looking at a draw in one of the four games at odds of 9/1 and above and this for me is the most likely draw. I feel that there ‘might’ be a bit of value in Donegal at 7/2 in the game against Cork, this one might be worth a punt if the Donegal team come with the momentum of victories over Derry and Galway in the previous rounds. I’m probably going with my heart and not my head here and the low odds on Cork will probably be justified. I’ll leave it for now and will wait to watch the games and might place a bet in running depending on how things are going.

Jeez, I feel as though I’m putting my neck on the line with predictions like this on here and it’s only my first post, maybe I a need a new approach already But there’s no money on for now and I’ll be back later if I decide to go ahead with any of these bets. Cold or what? No disciplined!
