Spurs Close in on Europa League Spot

Tottenham are looking good to qualify for the Europa League after winning their opening qualifying leg away from at Dinamo Tbilisi 5-0.

The Premier League club outclassed their rivals in Georgia, with new boys Roberto Soldado and Paulinho both finding the scoresheet in the rout.

The two sides will meet again at White Hart Lane next week for the second leg of the play-off tie though punters who bet on football would be crazy to bet against another easy Tottenham win such was their domination of the first leg. Before then Spurs host Swansea on Sunday as they look to build on their success against Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the domestic season.

Andros Townsend broke the deadlock on Thursday evening against the Georgian champions just 12 minutes into the game, much to the delight of the pundits doing the live football commentary. A second followed just before the break, when Townsend turned provider for Paulinho. It was the Brazilian’s first competitive goal since the switch to England from his native Brazil.

Soldado continued his good start to his Tottenham career with two second half goal. The Spaniard scored 30 goals for Valencia last season and has been signed by the Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas to boost their attacking options. The 28-year old broke the North-London club’s record transfer fee at £26 million during the summer and is already starting to repay that fee on the field.

There looked like there were to be more goals when Danny Rose found the back of the net after the hour mark, but Tbilisi held on. It was a quiet night Hugo Lloris who was in the visitors’ goal. The Frenchman was rarely troubled and had little to do for his clean sheet.

Following the game, the speculation about Gareth Bale’s future continued as the Welshman was not a part of the squad on the evening.
