Chelsea will qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League if they avoid defeat against Basel this evening in Switzerland. The Group E leaders will go through with at least a draw against the third placed side with one game to go.
Jose Mourinho’s side surprised the bet365 betting odds when they lost to Basel at Stamford Bridge in their opening game of their campaign in the competition earlier in the season. Since then though, they have gone on to win their next three games, with successes against Steaua Bucharest and twice over Schalke.
In those three games they have scored 10 goals and kept three clean sheets. Mourinho will keen to wrap things up tonight so he can rest players in their final group game against Steaua on December 11.
Chelsea have been in good form recently in all competitions, they have won 10 of their last 13 fixtures. They come into this game after a 3-0 victory in a London derby against West Ham on Saturday at Upton Park.
A brace from Frank Lampard and a goal from Oscar helped them wrap up the convincing win which sees them level on points with Liverpool in second place in the table. They are now just four points off early pace setters, Arsenal, who remain one of the favourites for the title on www.bet365.com.
Swiss league leaders Basel also warmed up for this tie with a win at the weekend. They ran out 4-1 winners over Thun. Despite beating Chelsea in matchday one, they did go down to the English side back in April in the Europa League at St Jakob Park.
The other game in the group this evening is in Hungary as Steaua look for their first win of the campaign against second place Schalke.
